Tony Blair the great Middle East Envoy, who has travelled to the region "hundreds of times", manages to show how useless someone can be while being terribly important.
In an interview, he uttered pious words about a two state solution and reviving the "peace process" where the Israelis and Palestinians sit around "negotiating". We have 30 years experience of that being bullshit. As I mentioned in an earlier post, what we quite clearly need is an international intervention to replace Israeli forces in Gaza and the West Bank, and to set the stage for a Palestinian state.
Blair was also heavily involved in the Abraham Accords aimed at normalizing relations between Israel and Arab countries. This is now, of course, very much on hold because of the Israel-Hamas War. It is also a process that relied on the fact that the Arab regimes are dictatorships given that the idea was naturally very unpopular domestically.
He claimed that it would somehow improve the prospects for a resolution of the Israel/Palestine conflict. To me it just looked like a free gift to Israel and a message to the Palestinians that you are on your own. Of course, Israel is likely to find itself in a less hostile neighborhood once it withdraws from the occupied territories. But there you have the horse firmly attached to the front of the cart.
What is your analysis of Hamas and the 7th October event?
