Am I right in believing that people are not thinking enough about "where to from here" on Palestine? I haven't been following the Gaza horror as much as I should but that's the impression I get.
The Palestine solidarity crowd are adding their voice to calls for an end to hostilities and military aid for Israel. That's all very well but it still leaves the Israeli occupation. That is not acceptable to the Palestinians nor to anyone else who is not a supporter of the Zionist project.
While a one state solution may be the perfect outcome it should not become the enemy of the best possible outcome, especially if it is not ruled out in the future.
Under current conditions the one state solution is not an available option. It has no support in Israel and they would resist it tenaciously. At the same time I cannot imagine a countervailing will on the part of the "international community" to impose it.
The immediate objective has to be the removal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the West Bank. This could only be achieved by an external security force and could only gain support and legitimacy if it is part of a process of creating a Palestinian state and preferably acting under a UN mandate. This is something where there could be political will especially if public opinion got behind it. If we had a genuine left you would see it take the lead on this question.
Of course, the pseudo left cannot go along with something like this because it could only happen with the active involvement of western powers, and as we all know the West is the main enemy and nothing it does could be supported even if it were undoing awful past policies.
